From the onset, Manisha found herself grappling with the nuances of Mallikajaan’s persona. Admitting that the initial scenes were particularly daunting as she endeavored to capture the essence of her character, she embarked on a journey of meticulous preparation. “The initial scenes were the most difficult, when I was not able to get the right sur (tone) of my character,” she revealed in a recent interview. With diligence and determination, she delved into extensive research, studying Mallikajaan’s physicality, demeanor, and linguistic nuances.

For Manisha, mastering Urdu proved to be a significant challenge, given its prominence in Mallikajaan’s dialogues. Undeterred, she enlisted the help of an Urdu dialect coach, investing countless hours to refine her delivery and pronunciation. “My entire focus was on getting the diction right,” she emphasized, underscoring her commitment to authenticity.

Drawing from personal experiences and insights, Manisha embarked on a journey to unravel Mallikajaan’s psyche. With no pre-existing reference points, she meticulously mapped out the character’s backstory, traumas, and aspirations. “I tried to understand what her childhood trauma was, what were her disappointments, where is she scarred, what are her dreams and ambitions, what is that she wants,” she explained, shedding light on her immersive approach to character development.

One particular scene stands out as a testament to Manisha’s unwavering dedication. Enduring seven hours of stillness as henna was applied to her hands, she remained steadfast in her pursuit of perfection. “I kept sitting for seven hours because I wanted to navigate the character and understand her,” she revealed, showcasing her willingness to go the extra mile for artistic excellence.

Navigating the rigorous demands of filming, Manisha faced the added challenge of prioritizing her health as a cancer survivor. Mindful of her physical limitations, she sought to strike a balance between dedication to her craft and self-care. “I knew it would be demanding and I would be consumed by it, but I also wanted to keep an eye on my health,” she acknowledged. With the support of the production team, including director Sanjay Leela Bhansali, she found a harmonious equilibrium, ensuring that her well-being remained paramount.

In retrospect, Manisha’s journey in Heeramandi serves as a testament to her resilience, passion, and unwavering commitment to her craft.
